Naga restaurant, Gili Asahan: Pan-Asian perfection in sleepy Sekotong Bay

Lombok’s culinary landscape continues to evolve at a frenetic pace, and even the tranquil Secret Gilis are getting in on the action. It’s no longer just about simple warung fare and grilled fish on the beach.

NAGA restaurant, housed at Amahelia Resort in Gili Asahan, is an eatery making waves of its own. It has eschewed the tried and trusted beach restaurant formula and is doing its own thing. NAGA, named after the mythical dragon, is a unique departure from the culinary norm in a number of ways: Most notably, it doesn’t have a rigid menu. It’s all about seasonality and freshness. The culinary team creates a fluid, ever changing Menu of the Day to ensure access to all the right ingredients on any given day.

Overhead view of a shared meal spread on a mosaic table, featuring burgers, fries, grilled skewers, a salad bowl, tuna tataki, and colorful drinks.

This means that potentially, no two visits are the same, and there are always mouthwatering surprises waiting to discover. While many beach restaurants try to cover too many bases with wide ranging “international cuisine,” NAGA concentrates on what it does best. It creates a distinct culinary journey – Pan-Asian classic and fusion cuisine with a focus on regional Southeast Asian dishes.

Of course, authentic Indonesian fare from around the archipelago is available, supported by Thai and Vietnamese salads, Sri Lankan and India curries, plus spicy Szechuan dishes. Standouts include Kung Pao Chicken, Beef Rendang, Pad Thai, as well as a selection of wholesome western bites. There is a comprehensive choice for vegetarians too. It is open for breakfast, lunch, sundowners and dinner. NAGA also has a varied assortment of desserts.

Sesame-crusted tuna tataki slices on a blue ceramic plate with soy dipping sauce and a citrus drink.
Glass noodles stir-fried with shrimp and rolled egg omelette, served on a banana leaf.

NAGA has a laid-back vibe akin to an intimate beach club with comfy wicker upholstered sofas in bold red. It overlooks the resort pool and has ample seating by the beach for al fresco dining and sundowners together with an inspiring ocean backdrop. It is surprisingly spacious both inside and out. Perfect for a celebration like a birthday.

The restaurant features a full bar serving up beer, custom cocktails and wine. It’s an ideal spot for couples dining or a convivial night out for large groups.
